Scientific Centres
Palacký University Olomouc has long been one of the most successful Czech university applicants for financial support under the Operational Programme “Research and Development for Innovation” (OP VaVpI). Thanks to university projects, science-research centres have been erected on the premises of Olomouc, and their significance reaches far beyond the region. In 2020, they were partially or fully integrated into the Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute.
CATRIN
Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN) is a higher education institute of Palacký University Olomouc (UP), formed by the integration of the scientific teams of the Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research (CRH), the Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials (RCPTM) and the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine (IMTM). The aim of CATRIN is to connect scientific-research capacities in biomedical research, nanotechnology and new materials and plant research is an important prerequisite for finding successful tools to address global challenges of the contemporary world, such as the impact of climate change, combating new types of pathogens, diagnosing and treating civilisation diseases, averting the impending food crisis, obtaining and storing ‘green’ energy, ensuring sufficient supplies of drinking water, protecting the environment and many other similar issues. The institute has been designed as an open structure into which other teams can enter in the future. CATRIN has ambitions to be a competitor for similar institutions abroad, thus making a crucial contribution to the competitiveness of Czech science on a world scale.

Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine
The institute is a technological infrastructure and platform for performing molecular-oriented basic and translational biomedical research. Scientists endeavour to better understand the molecular basis of human infectious diseases and cancer. Research is aimed at identifying new biomarkers and therapeutic goals.

Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials
CATRIN – RCPTM is a scientific centre focussed on nanomaterial and chemical research. It builds on the experience and results of the Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials (RCPTM), established in 2010. CATRIN – RCPTM focusses on the development of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies for energy harvesting and storage and for applications in environmental protection, catalysis, biomedicine, and biotechnologies. Research includes a wide range of low-dimensional carbon materials, 2D nanostructures, quantum dots, and metal-based materials with unique magnetic, optical, electrical, and biological properties.

Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research
CRH is a collaborative workplace of Palacký University Olomouc and Olomouc branches of the Institute of Experimental Botany at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Crop Research Institute. One of its parts, connected with UP, is part of UP’s higher education institute in Olomouc – the Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN). One of the great challenges for its scientists lies in mitigating the effects of climate change and averting the looming food crisis by means of sustainable agriculture. Using modern methods of molecular biology and genetic engineering, they are looking for ways to breed crops that not only have higher yields but also greater resistance to drought, weather fluctuations, diseases, and pests, as well as a higher content of substances with health benefits.
