Cross Ranking

Cross Ranking aims to collate the rankings of the three most prestigious world university rankings: the Academic Ranking of the World Universities (ARWU), the QS World University Rankings (QS), and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE). It is published under the auspices of the Educational Policy Centre at the Charles University Faculty of Education. According to the Universitas website, Cross Ranking provides a meta-analysis of the rankings of international higher education institutions and systems, where the basic idea is to link the available information and data from the above-mentioned rankings using both qualitative and quantitative indicators.

The current Cross Ranking, released at the end of 2019, compares more than 1,700 top-ranked world universities and the 50 most successful higher education systems. In 2012, only 821 universities ranked in at least one of the three top rankings (ARWU, QS, THE), i.e. exactly 900 less than in 2019. Asia has the largest representation (627 schools), however, that is only one quarter of the total score. Europe is represented by 579 schools, which represent two fifths of the total score. North America follows with 298 schools; however, US-based colleges (240 schools) represent one fifth of the overall score, which is the highest number of all countries in the world.

The Czech Republic is represented in Cross Ranking 2019 by 17 higher education institutions, which represent one percent of all listed universities. Compared to the previous year, there was an increase in the number of ranked Czech universities (from 15 to 17), which brought an increase in the overall score and a slight move upward for the Czech Republic, from the 39th position to the 33rd. Among Czech schools, Charles University has the best performance, ranking 269th and improving by seven places year-on-year. It is followed by the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (535th), Czech Technical University in Prague (544th), Masaryk University in Brno (548th), and Palacký University Olomouc (555th). Palacký University’s placement is up by 62 positions compared to the previous year.
