Josef Polišenský

Josef Polišenský was the most distinguished personality among Czechoslovak and Czech historians of the second half of the 20th century. His academic, and also inseparable educational interest was dedicated to Czech and general history of the early modern times with a research focus on the Thirty Years’ War, and to the history of the 19th century with focus on Napoleon and post-Napoleonic Europe. The publication activity of Prof Polišenský includes more than 120 books published in Czech as well as major world languages, and approximately 1500 articles published in prestigious foreign journals on history. From the 1940s to the 1960s, Prof Polišenský was employed at the Department of History at the re-established Palacký University Olomouc. He initiated and educated the Olomouc history school. Prof Josef Polišenský died on January 11, 2001.
