Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research
The Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research (CRH) is a scientific workplace that focuses on plant research nad the development of plant biotechnology. In addition to quality basic research, the science centre’s objectives include the trasfer of science and research into practice. The centre thus represents an imaginary bridge between the academic and commercial spheres, not only in agriculture but also in pharmacy and other fields.
CRH brings together research teams from the Palacký University Faculty of Science, Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences of and the Crop Research Institute. Over 220 staff are involved in interdisciplinary research. CRH Scientists are among the world leaders in reading the hereditary information of barely, wheat and other plants important for the nutrition of the ever-growing human population. Based on the results of basic research, they propose procedures that allow breeders to acquire new generation varieties with te desired characterictics, in particular higher yield and drought resistence, temperature fluctuations and other stress factors.
CRH is a Regional Branch Office of the European Federation of Biotechnology. In partnership with the EFB, it hosts the Green for Good Plant Biotechnogy Conference once every two years, which brings new trends in plant biotechnology, genetics or plant biochemistry to participants.
The centre is also involved in the education of students at the Faculty of Science. Its staff are guarantors of the fields of study and are involved in teaching and supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Students are involved in research teams and take the opportunity to make useful professional contacts, which gives them excellent starting positions at the labour market after graduating. CRH also protects research results in the form of licences, intensifies the application of the most progressive biotechnologies, or strengthens the competitiveness of regional businesses. It focuses primarily on Czech companies, but also works with foreign partners including multinational institutions.
