Antonín Holý

An outstanding Czech chemist, Antonín Holý dedicated his entire life to the preparation of modified components of nucleic acids. He discovered a number of antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, and herpes. He was able to not only develop needed substances but also find partners who would provide biological testing and start the manufacture of drugs from these substances. His work has benefited patients as much as his home institute, the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

As a world-renowned scientist he was invited to talk at a great many universities and institutes of science. Prof Holý held over 60 patents and was the co-author of 600 scientific publications. The number of his citations is over 10,000, which makes him one of the most influential chemists in the world. He received a number of awards, including the Czech Mind, the most prestigious award for scientists in the Czech Republic, granted to him in 2007. He also obtained a number of honorary doctorate degrees. His relationship with Palacký University was always strong, since he habilitated to become Docent and then received his professorship in Olomouc.
